Research: Moving to the cloud cuts energy consumption by 91%

Cloud computing uses 91 percent less energy than traditional on-premise applications. Nucleus evaluated Salesforce.com's customer base and found that cloud computing drives more than just significant financial savings: the effective sharing of resources also generates a substantial green benefit. In the case of Salesforce.com, its customers saved the equivalent of 11 barrels of oil every hour.

    Led by Salesforce.com and others, more and more organizations, regardless of size and sector, are moving to cloud computing to reduce capital expenditures, increase flexibility, and reduce the cost and time to deliver and adapt business applications.  2009 saw a boom in adoption of the Force.com platform for not just CRM applications but applications across many areas.  Other players such as Workday, Intacct, and NetSuite ― to name a few ― showed their ability to attract customers.  In 2010, the cloud adoption trend will continue, and vendors and systems integrators without real software-as-a-service strategies will be even more challenged to compete.

    With the success of software-as-a-service (saas) based vendors such as Salesforce.com and NetSuite, more and more applications are being accessed over the Web.  In fact, Nucleus is finding that applications once thought to be too proprietary or mission critical for saas, such as ERP, are increasingly being delivered as a service.  Given increasing rates of saas adoption, as well as current pressures to accomplish high-ROI deployments, Nucleus decided to examine the user base of saas vendor NetSuite.  NetSuite provides an on-demand platform that includes ERP, financials, e-commerce, and analytics.  The suite is designed to both provide applications that are interoperable out of the box and to enable better sharing of data among departments and applications.
