CIOs must be ready for the unexpected. Keeping the lights on is essential to most organisations in the digital age. But not many CIOs and IT teams face keeping a city’s vital IT running while fighting for their lives. That is exactly what Kyiv’s CIO and his team are doing right now. In this issue of CW EMEA, Oleg Polovynko, CIO at Kyiv City Council, explains how the IT team in the Ukrainian capital has kept services running for its residents amid relentless bombing by Russian forces. The IT department in Kyiv has a strategy to provide IT services that can support residents through these dark times. To this end, the first thing the IT department did was to ensure residents are made aware of missiles approaching, to give them time to take cover. An app previously used to provide residents with transport ticketing, parking and municipal information services was redesigned to send alerts to mobile phones when missiles approach the city. In this issue, read more about how Kyiv City Council’s IT team is supporting residents. This issue also looks at how the Netherlands is planning to regulate AI to reduce bias, how highly accurate time protocols ensure fair trading in finance, and the use of technology in agriculture in Denmark.
