There’s an undiscussed secret in the field of cybersecurity—something most IT professionals understand, even if they haven’t caught up with the latest research: The vast majority of cyber threats—99.96% to be exact—can be prevented through software updates that are patched in a timely manner.

It’s true. Gartner reports that zero-day threats only account for 0.04% of all threats worldwide, even though they receive the lion’s share of attention. When it comes down to it, once cyber threats and software vulnerabilities are discovered, they are quickly countered and blocked with additional code designed to sure-up gaps that could allow hackers in.

Therefore, the logical likelihood of a zero-day threat wreaking unchecked havoc occurs in a relatively small window of time. After that, a fix is available. However, the only way to deploy that fix is through new code deployed by (you guessed it) patch updates.
