In 2017, the Internet of Things (IoT) continued its – some might say relentless – march to mainstream ubiquity, with more and more real-world developments and deployments to take stock of. In 2018, there can be little doubt in anybody’s mind that IoT technology will continue to exert a huge impact on the world of IT, and everyday life.

In this e-guide, we will explore some of the latest trends around IoT deployments, looking at real world projects, options for CIOs interested in getting involved, and new applications.

To kick us off, Christian Annesley reports from Bristol, one of the most advanced smart cities in the UK, on the progress of the pioneering Bristol is Open project; QuoCirca’s Bob Tarzey runs the rule over the many digital platforms for IoT projects that are currently available; and Cliff Saran explores how the concept of a ‘digital twin’ can drive IoT adoption in industrial settings.

Meanwhile, Francisco Maroto from OIES Consulting looks ahead to what innovations may come to the smart home in 2018; and Prassana Naik, senior quality assurance engineer at Riverbed Technology, explores the possibilities at the intersection of two big networking trends – software-defined networks and the IoT.
