CW Europe – December 2015

In this issue we study the meteoric rise of flash storage in Europe. Initially perceived as an expensive and high risk investment, flash has become mainstream and by the end of the decade will be present in the vast majority of the continent's datacentres.

The reasons for this are primarily down to flash's speed of access to application data. As the demands of virtualisation and transactional processing increased, businesses could only keep up by throwing more spinning disk into the mix, which in turn drove down utilisation rates.

Flash stepped in and offered data access tens and hundreds of times quicker than with HDDs and now forms part of what IDC calls a “seismic shift” to solid state media in the datacentre. We look at how that has happened and the prospects for the next few years in flash storage in Europe.
