The growth of application-based or over-the-top (OTT) VoIP and messaging services – such as Facebook and WhatsApp – has left mobile network operators (MNOs) around the world deprived of a lucrative revenue stream totalling as much as $14bn a year, yet they are still incurring significant costs through managing and controlling the data traffic generated by ‘chatty’ apps.
In this special report for Computer Weekly readers, prepared by Juniper Research, we examine the impact of the growth in OTT services on traditional MNOs, some of which now regard OTT businesses as a bigger
competitive threat than rival networks.
The report will also explore how MNOs can adapt their business models to mitigate the effects of traffic growth on the network and highlight both new revenue opportunities around areas such as direct-carrier billing and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, as well as new ways in which MNOs can better monetise their existing voice and data services.
