Smartphones: Computer Weekly Buyer's Guide

Even Microsof t has realised it missed a ver y impor tant trick not having a mobile operating system that can compete with the likes of the iPhone, Android and Symbian. But how should CIOs and senior IT professionals manage this extension of corporate IT systems to the anytime, anywhere use? This eight-page Buyer’s Guide to Smar tphones assesses the market and the latest developments.

  • Mobile coupon technology

Juniper Research defines a mobile coupon as “a coupon sent to and stored on a mobile phone that can be exchanged for a rebate, a financial discount etc. at a retailer or merchant when the consumer purchases a product.” Mobile coupons and mobile ticketing are closely inter-related. It is important to understand what is on offer in ticketing because coupons use the same technology and can be often integrated with tickets to improve the commercial offer to customers.

  • Low cost handsets & entry level smartphones

It also has significant potential since it is not addressed by several of the large players such as Apple andResearch in Motion, though competition is increasing from local handset players in growth markets.Though the low cost market has existed for some years,  and was championed by the GSMA  as early as 2005,  shipment volumes are expected to be remain  resilient in the medium term, particularly in underpenetrated markets, since mobile penetration rates still lag developed markets by a significant margin. However sales margins will be thin, particularly in the most underdeveloped markets, owing to lack of affordability and eventually even developing markets will become saturated.
