Data governance more important now than ever

As organisations generate and store ever-increasing volumes of data, governance of that data has never been more important. If unchecked, the proliferation of data will result in project files being replicated throughout a network, and in conjunction with unrestricted access to project folders, this can lead to risks of data exposure.

Data governance is essential to data security, which requires organisations to know where data flows, with whom it is shared and where it lives at rest.

By bringing data under stricter control, through using collaborative tools and rigid policies, organisations will not only improve data security, but will also make gains in efficiency, cost effectiveness and customer trust.

Governance and transparency around how data is collected and protected is key to customer trust, and therefore makes good business sense, say privacy experts.

A year on from the full implementation of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UK’s privacy watchdog has urged organisations to embed sound data governance in all business processes.
