Benefits and Challenges of using SmartNICs for Distributed Shared Storage in Converged Infrastructure

Cover

The cost of additional storage controller layers has often been outweighed by the features and data services they provide. But in the case of NVMe drives, the sheer amount of performance is so high that any intermediary CPU becomes an unacceptable bottleneck, especially in the case of flexible scale-out storage infrastructures.

This paper presents a solution to this issue: removing the intermediary layer altogether with an efficient offload of part of NVMe-based storage infrastructure onto Smart RNICs. Read on to learn more about this approach and how it conserves local host CPU resources with minimal latency overhead.
