How more flexible file systems target backup silo pain points

Why is There a Need for a More Powerful File System?

Cover

The isolated silos in which storage was deployed (often each individual use case spawned a purpose-built file system) are no longer working. Case in point, purpose-built backup appliances provide in-line variable length deduplication to maximize space efficiency, but at the expense of random IO performance. What you’re left with is a secondary storage Tetris puzzle of components that don’t quite integrate.

To effectively consolidate these silos, enterprises need a file system which is simultaneously able to handle the requirements of multiple use cases, such as provide standard NFS, SMB and S3 interfaces, strong IO performance for both sequential and random IO, scalable snapshots, and native integration with the cloud. In order to view such a system, read on here.
