Big data is a challenge for many businesses but few speak publicly about it.
Those that are talking about it include the National Library Board (NLB) Singapore. In this issue Kia Siang Hock, deputy director – technology & Innovation, at the organisation gives details of a major project in the big data arena. The NLB comprises 25 public libraries and one National Library in Singapore.
Today, it uses big data, data mining and text analytics technologies to connect its structured and unstructured content so the most relevant information can be pushed to users automatically on its web sites and portals.
Big data technology has helped NLB to optimise the library collection to meet customer needs, recommend books and to unearth valuable library resources, at NLB's 25 Public Libraries throughout Singapore.
