IBM and Oracle TCO: The Lumpy Mattress

Cover Image

A lumpy mattress is similar to the total cost of ownership (TCO) of databases.

How?

When you push one part of the mattress down, another just rises. In terms of databases, pressures on margins in one part of a solution lead the vendor to increase prices in another part, leading to a TCO which may at first appear to be less than before, but often turns out to be greater than you first assumed.

This paper outlines Oracle's approach to this strategy, comparing its potentially strong negative effects on long-term customers to those of IBM's methods.
