SOA and Web Services: The Performance Paradox

Cover
Web services and Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) provide the flexibility enterprises need to adapt quickly to changing business demands. But they introduce a new paradox: communication between disparate systems is simplified yet the environment into which these services are deployed is more complex. Considering both the number of services in place, and the many points at which they intersect, how is it possible to ensure the health and availability of these services in a real-time production environment?

It's no longer enough to address the performance of services technologies such as web services without considering their impact on the environment into which they are deployed. Thus, any approach to managing web service-enabled applications will only be effective if it can see end-to-end into the entire transaction path and into each critical intersection along the way.
