Business Information E-Zine: NoSQL Makes its Mark

Cover Image

For decades, IT managers, developers and business executives had limited options when shopping for database technologies: Relational databases were universally built on top of the SQL programming language. It was SQL or nothing.

Now, thanks to Internet giants Yahoo, Google, Facebook, Amazon.com and eBay and the need for massively scalable Web applications, a rivaling branch of products that avoid SQL development tenets – and have more flexible designs – has emerged: NoSQL. But it doesn't mean the curtains are closing on SQL. In fact, its defiant-sounding name stands for "not only SQL," meaning some databases rely on SQL elements. So NoSQL technologies aren't replacements for relational databases, but they are a must for organizations with vast and ever-widening pools of Web, social media and other types of data.

In this issue of Business Information, we drill down on the facts surrounding NoSQL databases, tapping into the experiences of savvy startups and other companies whose needs led them to NoSQL technologies. But is NoSQL right for your organization? IT consultant Joshua Greenbaum poses some no-nonsense questions for would-be shoppers.

The April issue has not only NoSQL but also tips and insight on other trends sweeping the IT landscape. There's an examination of the Internet of Things, which, the hype holds, can connect everything you plug in and make work easier and cheaper. Technology journalist Stephanie Neil explores the rejuvenated industry and interest in cognitive computing, looking into the capabilities of IBM's Watson—and finding out what has changed since the demise of 1980s companies like Thinking Machines. And we close with a rumination on the ethics of data mining, a topic that's sure to generate interest in the wake of news events such as the National Security Agency's snooping.
