FORTRAN DEFINITION (continued): … Fortress is a programming language developed for high-performance computing (HPC) that can also serve as a general-purpose programming language. Sun Microsystems created Fortress, inspired in part by FORTRAN, which IBM created in the 1950s for use by mathematicians, engineers and scientists. The syntax in Fortress is well suited for mathematical notation, a characteristic it shares with FORTRAN. The language is designed to run on machines with large amounts of addressable random access memory (RAM) such as supercomputers and systems in academic and research institutions. Fortress may become popular as personal computers evolve with more RAM and more powerful microprocessors to allow smooth running of Vista. Fortress is ideal for solving sets of simultaneous equations in many variables and for other complex mathematical operations. The language, while expandable, is built around a compact core.
