Elliptic curve cryptography in transport ticketing
By Thyla van der Merwe and Keith Mayes
Fast transaction times play a key part in achieving desired levels of throughput in a transport ticketing system, but payment security is always paramount. The move towards elliptic curve cryptography on payment cards promises to help advanced ticketing systems achieve these aims.
The adoption of any new system, such as contactless payment card ticketing, or any new algorithms and protocols would need to match, if not improve upon, the operational performance of current systems. In this article, we look at transaction times using an architecture and technologies which would improve payment security.
