ABSTRACT:

Virtualizing servers has had an impact on nearly every facet of storage operations, but moving from physical to virtual servers had the greatest effect on backup. Firms tried traditional approaches with backup agents in each virtual machine and other short-lived solutions. New purpose-built backup apps shook up the market, spurring old-line backup vendors to update their wares. Virtual server backups are now a lot easier to accomplish, with plenty of alternatives to suit your shop’s particular needs.

Some firms are dabbling in cloud storage, but most just have a toe in the water. But you can easily integrate on-premises storage with cloud storage using a gateway appliance that effectively turns the cloud into another tier in your storage environment.

Our eighth Quality Awards for midrange arrays features a knock-down drag-out fight for first between Dell and NetApp, with Dell prevailing.
