Modern Infrastructure E-Zine: October 2013

Cover

Microsoft's Azure began as its Windows Server-based cloud platform, but that tight Windows integration has been no guarantee of success for Microsoft. Amazon Web Services and Google have become tough competition for Microsoft in the cloud computing world, and much of today's cloud development is not happening on Microsoft platforms.

For enterprise companies built on Windows technology, though, Azure may make sense as they look toward the cloud. Indeed, some in the industry think Azure could surpass Windows Server in importance, especially if Microsoft can use the Azure software to tie together other cloud services, such as Office 365, Hadoop, Office 2013 and its Systems Center 2012 suite of management tools.

In this issue of the Modern Infrastructure e-zine, we also examine the role Unix platforms are playing in the enterprise—and whether IT managers should stay or go when it comes to legacy Unix technology. This issue also examines the networking and infrastructure technology necessary to run successful BYOD-friendly IT shops.
