ABSTRACT:
This study from IBM and the Said School of Business at the University of Oxford reveals how businesses are exploiting Big Data and the challenges they face.
It provides a global snapshot of how organisations today view Big Data, how they are building essential capabilities to tackle Big Data and to what extent they are currently engaged in using it to benefit their business.
This research, which features several case studies, finds that almost two thirds (63%) of UK and Ireland businesses recognise the competitive advantage associated with Big Data.
This marks a significant increase with just over a third (34%) recognising its value back in 2010.
Findings:
- 63% of UK companies agree that Big Data provides a competitive advantage - up from 34% in 2010
- Social media provides wealth of untapped potential with only 39% of UK companies currently exploiting it for Big Data
- Lack of advanced analytics skills for tackling unstructured data cited as biggest challenge against Big Data
The report is based on a global survey of 1,144 business and IT professionals from more than 130 countries and 26 industries.
