Living with continual IT innovation presents organisations with a dilemma about how to extract the maximum value from existing investments, while at the same time delivering the benefits to the business that are made possible by new technologies.

 

The traditional ""stack"" view of IT infrastructure reflects a lock-in of high-level capabilities to the lowest levels of the stack, and this becomes ever more constraining as innovations are added to the top of the stack. Managing the complexity of the stack consumes much of the IT effort and budget, and inhibits the adoption of further initiatives.

 

The IT industry has already accepted that loose coupling between application services represents the best way of ensuring interoperability and adaptability. Now Ovum proposes that this should extend to vertical loose coupling to free components of all types from the constraints imposed by the incumbent technology stack.

 

This would permit further commoditisation of the technology stack to a small set of ""lowest common denominator"" stacks to support different styles of workload. At the same time it implies that the applications themselves should embed some of the less used infrastructure capabilities instead of expecting them to be delivered by a bloated stack.
