 802.11n Migration

Cover

In the world of wireless networking, "n" stands for "now."

We're talking about 802.11n, of course. It’s not only the newest, most advanced version of the 802.11 wireless standard; it’s rapidly becoming the wireless technology of choice for networking professionals in all-sized organizations.

In the last few short years sales of 802.11n wireless networking gear have skyrocketed, and have effectively displaced the legacy 802.11a/b/g versions in many organizations. Shipments of 802.11n access points jumped 44 percent from 2008 to 2009 according to market researcher In- Stat. Although the vast majority of initial sales went into low-end consumer and small-office environments, 802.11n is fast making a foothold in the enterprise market; in fact, In-Stat predicts enterprise shipments of access points based on the new standard will leap from 500,000 in 2009 to more than 32 million by 2012.
