When you purchase capacity for your data storage system, you may expect to use the entire amount. Unfortunately, this is not usually the case. Usable capacity is limited by a number of factors—from the common use of RAID to the practice of vendors holding back capacity for better performance or to enable certain storage system features. This paper looks at several of those factors and how they contribute to the true cost of storage.
