The company, which includes such familiar names as Bankers Life and Casualty and Colonial Penn Life Insurance, grew rapidly for several years through acquisitions.

As each new addition took place, IT equipment from the acquired firm's previous location was moved to the main Conseco data center in Carmel, Indiana. The Conseco IT team converted several of its physical servers to virtual servers running on VMware ESX hosts in order to transfer the virtual machines to Carmel electronically.
