E-mail was never intended to be a records management solution; nonetheless, that is effectively how it is used by many businesses today. Of course, information that is important from legal and regulatory perspectives must be kept, but not necessarily in the e-mail system. Archives can be moved into other business systems. It is difficult to keep all this information in the e-mail system over the long term unless technology is added to increase efficiency and reduce storage volumes. This dilemma is one that well-thought out e-mail archiving policies and procedures can largely eliminate.
