ABSTRACT:

Emerging information technologies like composite and multi-tier applications, service oriented architectures (SOA), virtualization, grid and cluster computing, and Web Service-based application delivery create an extraordinary opportunity for IT managers. With these dynamic technologies, they can provide business owners with IT services that are extremely flexible and agile, driving a more dynamic and competitive business. IT becomes a strategic asset that helps the business to bring products and services to market faster, improve internal productivity, and deliver quality IT services that drive business profitability.

However, managing this extremely dynamic enterprise brings with it new challenges. Managing the allocation of resources between real-time and deferred (or batch) computing becomes much more challenging, and requires greater real-time visibility and control. Manual management is slow, error-prone, and complex, and does not scale as the business grows. The heterogeneity of multiple tiers, operating systems, development platforms, databases and more increases the difficulty of managing these increasingly complex environments. And as business owners increase their dependency on these dynamic enterprise technologies, they need even more visibility into real-time IT processing so they can plan and manage their own business activities.

This paper will take a comprehensive look at these problems. It will investigate the emerging concept of the dynamic enterprise, and the technologies that are delivering it. It will consider the resulting need for swift application design incorporating automation and orchestration of critical and dynamic workloads and IT processes. It will look at how enterprises can address these needs to automate, control and manage dynamic workloads in realtime, based on business policies. Finally, it will provide some key requirements when looking for a solution in this area, and give real world examples of the benefits that dynamic workload automation delivers every day in a variety of industries.
