GRE VPN: A SmartEdge 800 Router IP VPN Feature
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) give service providers an opportunity to offer new services while using existing assets. While many providers plan to deploy VPNs based on BGP and MPLS, this transition will take time while both the core and edge routers are reconfigured with MPLS.
As an alternative, GRE VPNs on the SmartEdge 800 Router enable providers to quickly and easily offer a VPN service today with minimal impact on the network. No new routing protocols need to be configured and core routers can keep their existing configurations.
GRE VPNs are ideally suited for providers who want to prototype a VPN service for customers. If providers wish to eventually transition to MPLS, they may continue to operate GRE VPNs while this transition is taking place. The SmartEdge 800 Router's context feature allows carriers to more easily migrate their customers from GRE VPNs to BGP/MPLS VPNs.
