ABSTRACT:
External storage subsystems (also called "Storage Appliances") connect to host servers either directly or through a network, but are themselves complete and self-sufficient with all of the components necessary to independently store, manage, and retrieve data. Most external storage subsystems have a high degree of fault tolerance, which means they can continue working even when one of their components has failed.
