The ExtremeWare operating system starts with a well-written IP kernel to protect against and recover quickly from unexpected packets. In addition, it supports a large number of specific defenses against the attack schemes mentioned in this paper plus additional defense mechanisms - including ICMP and IP Option Response Control, SYN attack protection, IP Broadcast Forwarding Control, RFC 2267 Ingress Filtering - that will help protect against new attacks that haven't yet been identified. One additional significant feature of these same defenses is that they make it much more difficult to launch an Internet attack from a site built with Extreme Networks' devices.
