Linux in Retail & Hospitality: What Every Retailer Should Know
sponsored by Microsoft Corporation
The purpose of this paper is to dispel the popular notion that the Linux operating system is free and to arm retailers with the key areas they need to take a serious look at when considering Linux in their enterprise. This paper will also address how the Microsoft® platform compares with Linux in the retail sector in each of the key areas discussed. After reading this paper, retailers should have a clear understanding that although the Linux base operating system is free, the total cost of ownership is far from free. You simply pay for it in a different way. Throughout this paper, the term “retailers” is intended to include both hoteliers and restaurateurs along with traditional retailers. Similarly, terms such as “retail industry” and “retail sector” are intended to include both the hospitality and food service markets.
